Sun. Deciduous, with pinnate leaves and spectacular peacock flowers that eat up summer heat, attracting swarms of hummingbirds and butterflies. On its own it grows to shrub size.Drought hardy once established; see it planted along highways throughout San Antonio. The stems are thorny, but in San Antonio, these are often cut back to the ground after hard freezes.
