CAST-IRON PLANT

Shade or filtered shade only. Evergreen, with dark glossy leaves that endure both heat and extreme cold. A rhizomatous perennial, it survives with minimal water or care; it is frequently massed for texture under big live oaks. The name says it all.Once established, aspidistra tolerates neglect, dust and dark shade, but not exposure to the sun, which quickly bleaches the leaves. Cut back as needed to restart.Aspidistra is seen in the landscape and as an indoor houseplant. It can be expensive; established plants are valued as pass-alongs, as they’re slow growing.
